Marlborough College

O&O are proud to be nearing completion of the third and final phase of the science building redevelopment at Marlborough College, delivered in collaboration with Beard.

This final phase focused on the transformation of the listed Newton Building, a complex and characterful structure made up of multiple science laboratories, lavatories, split levels and an auditorium, with a layout reminiscent of a Hogwarts-style building. The new design represents a dramatic change from the original arrangement, creating a modern and functional educational environment while respecting the heritage of the building.

A key part of the redevelopment involved removing the central core of the building to create a large new auditorium on the first floor, alongside a new library space at ground level, while retaining and upgrading the science laboratory facilities.

With much of the building designed around open spaces, exposed ceilings and exposed wall finishes, the electrical installation presented a number of challenges. Working closely with Beard and the project architects, O&O developed and refined multiple installation solutions to ensure the finished result complemented the quality and detail of the overall build.

The electrical package comprised complete new services throughout, including lighting and decorative lighting systems with scene-setting controls, new power installations integrated with the mechanical and life safety systems, a new fire alarm installation and various specialist services.

This has been an exciting and rewarding project to be involved with, and one that reflects the strength of collaboration and quality delivered throughout all three phases of the redevelopment.
